Before you start

The Kingkiller Chronicle is Patrick Rothfuss's frame narrative: Kvothe, legendary and burned out, tells his life to a scribe over three days. Two days exist as novels; the third, The Doors of Stone, is still unpublished. The Slow Regard of Silent Things and The Narrow Road Between Desires are optional companion novellas. Beautiful prose, unfinished story. Go in with eyes open.

Reading order is simple: The Name of the Wind, then The Wise Man's Fear. Slow Regard follows about a week with Auri. Narrow Road expands Bast's story from The Lightning Tree. No main-plot spoilers, but both sing louder after Wise Man's Fear. Skip them entirely if you only want Kvothe's story.

You cannot finish the arc yet. Start with Name of the Wind knowing book three is not out. That is the honest version of the recommendation, and still the one most fans give. Waiting for Doors of Stone is a valid choice.
