How Harry Potter is structured

Before you start

Harry Potter is one continuous story across seven novels (1997–2007), each roughly a school year at Hogwarts. Early mysteries pay off later; later books assume you already know the people, the scars, and the reveals. Publication order is the only order that makes sense for a first trip through.

The seven novels are the story. The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Hogwarts Library textbooks, and the Cursed Child playscript are extras. Fantastic Beasts film screenplays are Newt-era film stories; different from the Hogwarts textbook titled Fantastic Beasts. Illustrated and anniversary editions do not change the sequence.

Start with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US). It gets darker and denser as it goes; the last two books are longer and heavier than the early ones. There is no alternate path worth chasing for a first read. Begin at year one and walk forward. If someone handed you the series as a kid and you bounced off book one, try again. The gear shift into darker books is half the reason people stay.
