Before you start

The Dresden Files follows Harry Dresden, wizard for hire in Chicago, through mystery cases that escalate into vampires, faeries, fallen angels, and worse. Jim Butcher has published eighteen main novels since 2000, with more planned. Early books are leaner noir; later ones get operatic.

Read the eighteen novels in publication order. Side Jobs after Changes contains Aftermath, which bridges into Ghost Story. Brief Cases after Skin Game, before Peace Talks. Graphic novels and the TV take are different animals with different priorities.

Do not skip ahead. Butcher stacks relationships, conspiracies, and power creep across the run. Early books matter later in ways that will annoy you if you jumped. Peace Talks and Battle Ground are a paired punch from the same year; read them back to back. No alternate novel order for the main sequence. Book one is the thinnest; if the voice works, keep going. The series finds its stride a few novels in and then does not let go.
